Though winning isn’t always everything, but on that night, August 25, 2014, at the Limketkai Atrium, winning was the only thing in the heads of the nine Gwapos. They have been through a lot, collectively and individually. Some of them took time from their busy schedules just to continue on and pursue the title of Barangay Gwapo 2014. Nine Gwapos, One winner – the odds are not in anyone’s favor.
The crowd was fully hyped, especially with the hosts, the MOR DJ’s, antics that just kept on drawing the crowd in, making them want more of the Gwapos with each round.
Minor, major and corporate prizes were then awarded to the chosen Gwapos. Harold Villegas (Gwapo No. 6) was awarded as Gwapong Congeniality, Gwapong Photogenic, and Best in Casual Wear. Gwapo No. 4, Luis Cabigas won Best in Talent and Best in Active Wear (Andre by Mags). The award for the Gwapo that had the Best Physique went to Hussain Mohamad. The award for the FIRST EVER GOLD STAR GWAPO was awarded to Erlfred Balandara (Gwapo No. 2).
Though the prizes were great, but no prize would probably measure up to being hailed as the Barangay Gwapo 2014, a prize cherished and treasured by last year’s winners, Junix Murillo (3rd Runner-up), Val Anthony Araneta (2nd Runner-up), Chad Paler (1st Runner-up) and Barangay Gwapo 2013 Paul James Pagalan. The 4 Gwapos were both enthralled and emotional as they took their last bows as Barangay Gwapos. But, as fans, we know better that they will forever be our Barangay Gwapos.
And the moment of truth inevitable; all the nine Gwapos lined up, wearing their Boogie Musni Rivera Collection Formal Wear, waiting to hear the results.
Placing as the 4th Runner-up was the Gwapong Boy Next Door of Barangay Tablon, John Micheal Edloy. The Chinitong Gwapo of Barangay Macabalan won as the 3rd Runner-up. 2nd Runner-up was Luis Cabigas, Gwapong Baby Face ng Barangay Lumbia. Erlfred Balandara, the Maginoong Gwapo of Barangay Bonbon, was hailed as the 1st Runner-up.
Nerves were getting more and bigger. You could see from the stage the amount of nerves and restlessness that shrouded the remaining Gwapos, waiting and praying their name would be called to be the winner. But with all that wishing and praying and hoping, only 1 of it was answered with a yes. Congratulations to Gwapo Number 8, the Astig na Gwapo ng Barangay Pagatpat, Hussain Mohamad for winning the title, BARANGAY GWAPO 2014!
