Navy places 3 ships on standby as tension in Koreas escalates

THE Philippine Navy (PN) on Thursday placed three ships on standby in the wake of the escalating tension between North and South Korea.

These include two logistic ships and one escort.

The PN ships were ordered on alert footing PN flag-officer-in-charge Vice Admiral Jose Luis M. Alano.

“(Vice Admiral Jose Luis M. Alano) ordered the ships to be on alert for possible deployment in contingency and humanitarian assistance especially for Filipinos that will be affected if the (tension between the two Korea turn) into a full blown crisis,” PN spokesperson Lt. Cmdr. Gregory Fabic said.

Around 40,000 Filipinos living and working in South Korea.

Fabic said the ships will be under the operational control of the maneuvering force of the PN, the Fleet-Marine Ready Force under the command of Commodore Alexander S. Lopez.

The ships will be placed on standby and will be deployed upon instructions from the higher headquarters. PNA
